UA football is done for the season, Cal game cancelled

And just like that, the University of Arizona football season is over.

Done.

This according to the Pac-12 Conference.

“The Pac-12 has, after consultation with both Arizona and Cal, cancelled the Arizona at Cal football game scheduled for the weekend of Dec. 19,” the Pac-12 said via email. “This decision was made under the Pac-12’s football game cancellation policy due to both Arizona and Cal not having the minimum number of scholarship student-athletes available for the game. Under Conference policy, the game will be declared a no contest.”

So, Arizona’s season ends at 0-5 and riding a 12-game losing streak.

Arizona is a day removed from firing its head coach of three years in Kevin Sumlin. He is being replaced in an interim basis by Paul Rhoads, the former head coach at Iowa State.

Following Friday night’s 70-7 loss to rival Arizona State, it was thought Arizona might not be able to field the required number of players for the game against Cal given the number of injuries and possible COVID-19 cases.

Late Sunday night, the announcement came.
