The Pima Community College men’s basketball team fired on all cylinders in a dominant performance against Glendale Community College, beating them 114-81 on Saturday.

In a game in which six players on Pima would finish in double-figures, The Aztecs’ combination of speed, physicality and touch from the three-point range were too much for the Gauchos.

The Aztecs held a 62-40 lead at halftime, thanks, in part, to six three-pointers from sophomore Daniel Moody (Walden Grove), who finished the first half with 20 points.

Pima (14-8,6-7) went on to outscore Glendale 52-41 in the second half, finishing 18-31 behind the arc as a team.

“I just feel like when we play as a team, we connect, and extra passes is one thing we do focus on, and that’s what works for us, and it shows on the court,” Moody said.

Even though Pima led by double-digits most of the game, head coach Brian Peabody made sure the team didn’t let up.

“We brought up Phoenix College,” he said. “Last game against Phoenix, they came out in the second half and went on a 20-4 run, ended up taking the lead in the second half, and then we actually came back.

“So we brought that, we referenced it at halftime, trying to not let the same thing happen.”

The win kept Pima tied at the top of the conference standings with little room to spare.

“Right now, we’re tied for first,” Peabody said. “One game is separating everybody, so we just gotta take one game at a time. I know that’s an old saying, but it really is for us, one game at a time.

“We get Scottsdale on Monday, and we’ll be in first place by ourselves.”

Moody finished with a game-high 23 points on 8 for 12 shooting and 6 for 7 from three-point range. He added 10 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Chrishon Dixon finished with 12 points on 3 for 4 shooting and 2 for 3 from three-point range. He added a game-high 14 assists and six rebounds.

Freshman forward Traivar Jackson finished with 17 points. He added a game-high 16 rebounds and one assist.

Freshman guard Pierce Sterling finished with 14 points. He added nine assists and four rebounds.

Freshman forward Jalen Johnson finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Freshman forward Griffin Effenberger finished with 14 points on 5 for 6 shooting and 4 for 5 from three-point range. He added four rebounds and one assist.

Pima plays next against Scottsdale Community College at West Campus Aztec Gymnasium on Monday at 5:30 p.m.
