Jerryd Bayless is not only earning more minutes with Memphis with Rudy Gay no longer around, but he is also gaining more popularity in that city.

The former Arizona guard recently served as the principal for the day at a Memphis elementary school.

Bayless visited classrooms and encouraged students to read regularly as they participate in the Read to Achieve Reading Challenge, which is a six-week program that encourages students to read at least six books in six weeks outside of the standard classroom curriculum.

After Gay was traded to Toronto on Jan. 31 as part of a six-player deal involving three teams.

Bayless’ scoring chances have increased with Gay gone. He is earning more playing time. He started playing more with Gay in the lineup. He averaged 22.4 minutes per game in January after playing only 16.6 in December.

Bayless has posted six or more assists four times in January after doing it only twice previously this season. He’s scored in double figures in four straight games after doing so three times previously this season.
