The Arizona football team begins its 2013 season against Northern Arizona at Arizona Stadium on Aug. 30, which is only two days away. From now until then, this Web site will count down the days with facts about the Wildcats, their players, coaching staff and opponents. This is not a ranking, only a list of 100 facts and observances related to the 2013 Arizona football team and coach Rich Rodriguez.
Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez will be hard-pressed to build upon his 8-5 season from his first year with the Wildcats last season.
Rodriguez’s eight victories are the most in the Pac-10/12 era for Arizona coaches. Jim Young went 8-3 in his first season in 1973. The Wildcats were in the WAC at that time.
If Rodriguez’s team pulls through and posts a better record than 8-5, he would join some of the best Arizona coaches in making positive strides in the second year.
Young went from 8-3 to 9-2 in 1974. Larry Smith was 5-6 in 1980 in his first season and 6-5 in 1981 (including a victory over No. 1 USC). And Dick Tomey followed his 4-4-3 initial season with the Wildcats in 1987 with a 7-4 record in 1987, finishing with a three-game winning streak, including a triumph over ASU.
A string of eight consecutive UA coaches improved on their winning percentage from their first to second year before John Mackovic followed his 5-6 season in 2001 with a 4-8 mark in 2002.
Rodriguez-coached teams have improved by at least two wins in his second season at his previous schools. If that stat holds true, then the Wildcats will 10 games in 2013.
Here is how Arizona football coaches have fared in their second year compared to their first. Coaches in bold made an improvement in winning percentage from their first to second season:
[table “” not found /]The best Arizona player to wear No. 2, according to TucsonCitizen.com’s Anthony Gimino, is running back David Adams (1984-86). He didn’t rush for as many yards as another No. 2 scatback (Ontiwaun Carter), but Adams was more thrilling and his numbers were impressive — 2,571 yards.
