— Although it was a routine win for Arizona with three impressive touchdown runs and an interception return for a touchdown, the Wildcats topped last year’s high mark of 10 helmet stickers against USC. Arizona earned 11 against the Lumberjacks mostly because of defensive plays and special-teams coverage performances that were lacking most of last season.

— The Wildcats scored on a defensive play, which happened only once last year against Oklahoma State on a Johnathan McKnight interception return for a touchdown. Tra’Mayne Bondurant returned one 23 yards last night for a touchdown.

— Arizona also did not commit a turnover, which happened only once — against Oklahoma State — last season. The UA held NAU to 13 points or less. That happened only once a year ago against South Carolina State in a 56-0 victory. Last but not least, the UA defense forced NAU into punting in five possessions of three-downs-and-out. That happened only against South Carolina State last year.

— The special teams struggled overall with Drew Riggleman averaging only 33 yards a punt and Jake Smith missing a 28-yard field goal in the third quarter. The coverage of punts and kickoffs, however, were ideal. Arizona kept NAU inside the 20 on two kickoffs and Riggleman pinned the Lumberjacks at their own 5 in the third quarter with a 55-yard punt.

— On the negative side, the Wildcats last night had only six plays of 12 or more yards and produced only two drives of eight or more plays. Half of those six plays of 12 or more yards were touchdown runs by Daniel Jenkins (91 yards), B.J. Denker (30 yards) and Javelle Allen (61 yards). Last season with Matt Scott at quarterback, the UA had 11 games in which they had at least 10 plays of 12 more yards. The UA also had eight games in which they produced four drives of eight plays or more.

HELMET STICKER CRITERIA
How did Arizona fare in its 35-0 win over NAU on Friday?

The Wildcats earn cat claws for the Arizona helmet if they achieve these following marks. This grading system is stringent. The Wildcats must achieve their goal. If it states the UA must achieve “more than” a certain mark, they must pass that mark. This helmet will be updated weekly as the Wildcats attempt to fill the helmet with the cat claws:
