AllSportsTucson.com blogger Andy Morales will receive the Arizona Interscholastic Association’s Skip Bryant Media Award next month during the organization’s award luncheon in Phoenix.
The AIA has informed Morales, a blogger with TucsonCitizen.com before it went to an archive-only operation in January, that he earned the award as “the top writer/promoter of high school athletics.”
Morales’ passion for covering high school sports was the deciding factor, according to the AIA.
Aside from writing for AllSportsTucson.com, Morales has a monthly column in the Vail Voice newspaper.
“When I first started out almost five years ago the Citizen went out in print,” Morales said in a recent AllSportsTucson.com podcast with his brother Javier. “At that point in time … my oldest daughter was a high school athlete and I knew first-hand how well the Citizen covered high school sports. They actually came out and watched games and did daily stories.
“I was worried that was going to go out when that happened. … One thing our father (Hector Morales) wanted to start was a recruiting service for minority kids. I really didn’t want to get into that, but I felt like this is maybe a way to help out one of his dreams to spotlight kids more in sports.”
Andy Morales has been a youth, high school and college coach for over 30 years. His own children have won multiple state high school championships and were named to all-state teams. Competing in hockey, basketball, baseball and track & field in high school, his unique perspective can only be found here and on the pages of the Vail Voice.
