Arizona’s baseball series with ASU this weekend has ramifications beyond the diamond at Hi Corbett Field.

The Wildcat athletic department is in trouble in this year’s Territorial Cup competition with ASU as the school year winds down.

After Arizona’s 2-1 loss to ASU tonight in front of 5,188 at Hi Corbett, the Wildcats are one loss away from falling another point down against ASU in the 2013-14 Territorial Cup standings.

ASU presently has an 8.5 to 6.5 lead with five sports remaining: Baseball, men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. The Sun Devils have a 2-1 head-to-head edge in baseball with games remaining Saturday night and Sunday. The Wildcats must win both to earn the point in the standings. If ASU wins Saturday or Sunday, the Sun Devils will lead the Territorial Cup by three points.

The men’s golf tournament is this weekend at The Gallery at Dove Mountain in Marana. After the second round, ASU is No. 4 and Arizona is tied for seventh.

ASU wins the 2013-14 Territorial Cup competition with a win in baseball either Saturday or Sunday and if the men’s golf team tops Arizona in the Pac-12 men’s golf competition this weekend in Marana.

The Arizona women’s golf team was in third place and ASU in fifth after the first round of the Pac-12 tournament at Corvallis, Ore., on Friday.

The men’s and women’s track and field meet is May 17-18 at the Mooberry Track & Field Complex in Pullman, Wash.

Arizona is hoping those meets at Washington State will mean something as far as the Territorial Cup is concerned after this weekend.
