Arizona quarterback Anu Solomon shows his fun side by commenting about the perils of being nervous when he was named the Wildcats’ starter heading into the season-opener Aug. 29.

Solomon offered some sage advice to the young athletes in attendance yesterday.

Boise State overlooked Scooby Wright despite having him in town on a couple of occasions, including the day before he committed to Arizona. Ouch.

An achievement of its own for Arizona: In the modern era, the Wildcats have never faced a conference champion before in a bowl game. Arizona played Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association co-champion Centre (Ky.) in the 1921 San Diego East-West Christmas Classic. The Praying Colonels beat the Wildcats 38-0. Pitt was an independent in 1979, when they were awarded the Lambert-Meadowlands Trophy as the champion of the East (whatever that is) before facing Arizona in the Fiesta Bowl.

Playing in the Fiesta Bowl helps Greg Byrne’s plan of Arizona becoming more visible in the Phoenix market. The Wildcats will return to Glendale in 2016 to play BYU in a regular-season game.

Boise State running back Jay Ajayi has used the hashtag #1MoreLeft all week in anticipation of ending his college career before taking on the opportunity of playing at the next level. His accomplishments: Named to All-Mountain West First Team. Continues on pace for the greatest season by a running back in Boise State history heading into the Fiesta Bowl. He owns Boise State single-season records for all-purpose yardage (2,225) and carries (325), ranks second in rushing yardage (1,689), rushing touchdowns (25) and total touchdowns (29). He leads the country in scoring (13.4 points per game), ranks second in rushing touchdowns, third in all-purpose yardage, fourth in rushing yards and ninth in rushing yards per game (129.9).

Boise State coach Bryan Harsin, who will be coaching a Power 5 program within a couple of years, is recognized as an intelligent task master. If Boise State loses to Arizona it won’t be because the Broncos did not pay attention to detail.

The Broncos will carry the us-against-the-big-boys theme against Arizona in the Fiesta Bowl.

“Pac-12 power” and Arizona did not mix until this year because the Wildcats won one of college football’s toughest divisions, the Pac-12 South. If Boise State has a good showing in the Fiesta Bowl, may make some believe Boise State can be team 13 or 14 of the Pac-14 when the conference expands. San Diego State the other team? Why not?
