Southern Arizona Football Recap

Much too early for playoff talk? I don’t think so. This is what the playoff picture looks like for teams from Southern Arizona:

6A CONFERENCE

Tucson (3-3) lost 66-33 to Cienega. The loss keeps Sunnyside (2-4) and Rincon/UHS (2-4) in the hunt for the Tucson Sub-Region representative to the Southern Region playoff game. Kofa (5-1) and Cibola (4-2) are battling it out in the Yuma Sub-Region.

5A CONFERENCE

Cienega (5-0) must now be considered the top contender for the Southern Region crown but Ironwood Ridge (4-1) and Mountain View are right there with the Bobcats.

The Nighthawks lost a big game at Queen Creek (37-12) Friday night but there is a chance for redemption with Mountain View visiting next week. Sahuaro (1-4) has to pretty much run the table and people counted them out last year at this time also.

Ironwood Ridge had difficulty stopping Marana in the opening week, giving up 42 points, and it looked like some of those demons came back in the Queen Creek game. Mountain View outlasted Poston Butte 34-17 to set up the game with Ironwood Ridge.

Desert View moved to 5-0 in the Sonoran Region thanks to a 42-20 win over Sunnyside. The Jaguars will visit Cholla next week which means a 6-0 start is highly likely but the games with Mountain View, Flowing Wells (3-2), Marana (3-2) and Poston Butte (3-2) are still on the horizon.

Marana beat Canyon del Oro 44-20 to remain in the battle.

4A CONFERENCE

Salpointe (4-1) beat Pueblo 47-21 to keep pace with Catalina Foothills (4-1) in the Kino Region. The Falcons beat Pusch Ridge 31-20. Canyon del Oro is still in the bunch and the Dorados will host Catalina Foothills next week while Salpointe hosts Cienega.

Pueblo (3-2) and Amphitheater (3-2) appear to be the two Gila Region powers. Thankfully, the two will meet on the final Friday of the season.

3A CONFERENCE

Sabino (4-1) controls the South Region with Pusch Ridge the only other contender in the region at this point.

2A CONFERENCE

Tombstone (4-1), Santa Cruz (4-0) and Benson (4-1) are headed to a major showdown in the South Region.

1A CONFERENCE

St. David (4-1) and Valley Union (4-1) will meet in three weeks.
