Air Force players visited the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base yesterday and they got an up-close look at the A-10 Warthog.
That aircraft is the inspiration for the Air Force Sharktooth Helmets, the helmets they’ll wear in Friday’s NOVA® Home Loans Arizona Bowl against South Alabama at Arizona Stadium. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m., Tucson time.
“What an awesome bowl, first of all,” Air Force coach Troy Calhoun said. “First class in all regards, where you stay and the quality of the practice facilities.
“But then the real part of it (visiting Davis-Monthan) for our guys, who are going to serve on active duty … many of whom will go on to pilot training and certainly some of which will fly the A-10.”
Former Air Force tight end Keith Madsen, of the 47th Fighter Squadron at Davis-Monthan, played for the Falcons from 2006-09. He served as a tour guide for Air Force’s players yesterday.
“When I was in their shoes seven to 10 years ago, it’s difficult to see what they’re going to be doing after the academy,” Madsen said. “So it’s big to show them not just the mission that we do but the mission that everyone on base does.”
