NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl a hit with peripheral festivities

The downtown block party and tailgate festivities organized by the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl is something new for Tucson, and both were a success from my vantage point.

A native Tucsonan who covered the defunct Copper Bowl and Insight.com Bowl when they were in operation, I can’t recall the pregame festivities coming close to what Tucsonans experienced the last couple of days.

The weather cooperated for both events, which is very important. The temperatures were not too cold and were warm enough to go without a heavy jacket.

The downtown block party had quality live music and the lure of the marching bands and cheer teams of South Alabama and Air Force competing against each other.

The Tucson-brewed beer from the Barrio Brewing Co. was good on the tastebuds.

Today’s tailgate festivities that included the Nacho Festival competition among local restaurants was also well-staged. A few feet away, the Gin Blossoms concert delighted folks who had a rare chance to stand close to a stage featuring the Tempe-based rock group.

And in a stroke of genius the event organizers staged a live pro wrestling ring within the Nacho Festival area. Nacho Libre made an appearance and thrilled the crowd. Here are some of my Facebook posts from the last couple of days (Bravo, Arizona Bowl):
