Arizona Wildcats Productivity Report: Alkins aggressive in seven-game win streak

[rps-paypal]

Synonymous with the Arizona Wildcats’ seven-game winning streak — including the last loss against Gonzaga — freshman forward Rawle Alkins is unquestionably Sean Miller’s most aggressive player.

Before the Gonzaga game (seven-game span), Alkins was averaging 10.9 points and 3.3 rebounds a game. He made 27 of 52 (51.9 percent) field goal attempts including 8 of 22 (36.4 percent) from 3-point range.

Including the Gonzaga game — an eight-game span to now — Alkins has averaged 14.3 points and 7.9 rebounds. He made 37 of 90 (41.1 percent) from the field, including 11 of 29 (37.9 percent) from 3-point range.

Alkins’ shooting percentage might be off but he is shooting at a much greater rate, a direction from Arizona’s coaches to be more aggressive. That shows with his number of shots and his dramatic increase in rebounds.

Dusan Ristic and Lauri Markkanen benefit the most because Alkins draws defenders and keeps the defense unsettled with his inside-outside ability.

Alkins has tried 51 field goals inside the arc in the last eight games after trying only 30 in the first seven games. He has made 29 of 39 of free-throw attempts. In the first seven games, he was 14 of 19. That’s 20 more free-throw attempts, a dramatic increase, and a sure sign of Alkins playing with more intensity.

The formula is clear for Arizona, judging by its seven-game win streak: Alkins must take advantage of the green light and go strong.
