Mountain View won the Division II state championship with a score of 177.5 to 171 over Queen Creek. The Mountain Lions were paced by individual state champions:
120: Senior Jayce Cunha (28-4) over Armando Valencia of Sahuaro (Fall 5:59).
132: Sophomore Marcus Castillo (38-2) over Atilano Escobar of Liberty (Dec 9-5).
“Couldn’t be happier,” head coach PJ Ponce said. “Queen Creek beat us by 42 points in Las Cruces earlier and we told the guys no one believes you can do it but us in this room. We won as a family.”
Ponce said the team got a big boost when Cunha came up with a pin over Valencia of Sahuaro and the “team caught on fire” when Castillo beat Escobar of Liberty.
Cienega senior Skyler Cavanaugh (30-5) won the 220-pound division over Jacob Kidd of Bradshaw Mountain (Dec 3-2).
In Division I, Sunnyside took second place and the Blue Devils were paced by state champions:
106: Freshman Jesse Ybarra (45-3) over Chris Kelly of Chandler (Dec 4-1).
113: Junior Manny Garcia (38-4) over Andres Duron of Cibola (Dec 6-5).
132: Junior Roman Bravo-Young (43-0) over Peter Rossi of Desert Mountain (MD 18-6).
145: Senior David Salazar (48-3) over Alan Beltran of Cibola (Fall 5:28).
Sunnyside junior Roman Bravo-Young won his third straight championship in his remarkable career. When asked about how this one felt Bravo-Young simply said, “Just as good as the first. The pressure is off. A lot harder to stay on top then it is to get there!”
Tucson senior Michael Escobedo (53-10) won the 170-pound division over Jason Moore of Red Mountain (Dec 5-3).
