Four teams from Southern Arizona advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 5A state playoffs today. Cienega, Salpointe and Catalina Foothills held court Saturday night while Sahuaro upset Northwest Christian in Phoenix earlier in the day.
Top-seeded Cienega will host No. 8 Deer Valley in quarterfinal round on Tuesday, May 9 while No. 7 Catalina Foothills will travel to No. 2 Horizon Honors. No. 11 Sahuaro will visit No. 3 Salpointe.
The win by Sahuaro increased head coach Sandy Novak’s career win total to 673. Novak is set to retire after this year but we will add a new name to the leaderboard with former Salpointe coach Amy Johnson jumping near the top after some research found her to have 670 career wins with 347 coming on the boy’s side. It is doubtful anyone will be able to break Johnson’s 347 win total any time soon.
