Golf Notes: Jonathan Walters takes second at city and state; Alex Gray interning at Winged Foot

Canyon del Oro senior Jonathan Walters won the Thunderbird Junior Classic on June 15 at the Arizona Biltmore Country Club with a 15-under 129, beating Daniel Thompson of Phoenix by two strokes.

Rincon/University standout Dallan Graybill recorded a double-eagle (albatross) on the par 5, 14th hole during second round action. To help him finish 6 under.

Walters went on to take second place at the State Junior Golf Championship on June 21 at the Forest Highlands Golf Club in Flagstaff. Walters and Notre Dame standout Mason Quagliata both finished with a 7-under 137, forcing a playoff.

Quagliata won on the third hole of the playoff for the championship.

ALEX GRAY AT WINGED FOOT

Sabino standout Alex Gray snagged a prime internship at the prestigious Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York this summer. The club hosted the U.S. Open five times and will host again in 2020.

The incoming senior will spend eight weeks at the club, learning all aspects of major golf. The internship provides room and board.
