Kayla Green named WAC Pitcher of the Week & Nick Ames named Mountain West Player of the Week

Kayla Green (NM)

Former Cienega pitcher Kayla Green was named Pitcher of the Week by the WAC for the second week in a row.

Green went 1-1 with a 1.17 ERA over 12 innings pitched for New Mexico State. In a loss to top-ranked Oklahoma, Green pitched a complete game, allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out a Sooner batter. Against Boston U, she pitched five innings and allowed seven hits and no earned runs.

This is the fifth time Green has earned this honor for New Mexico State.

Former Canyon del Oro standout Nick Ames earned Mountain West Player of the Week honors for UNLV after he batted .500 with six extra-base hits and added eight RBI and six runs. This is the first weekly honor for the Rebel first baseman.

Ames went 6-for-12 with a pair of hits in all three contests at the UNLV-hosted Marucci Desert Classic. He smashed three home runs and legged out two doubles and one triple en route to a 1.583 slugging and .571 on-base percentage, which was aided by two walks.

In the season opener vs. Indiana State, Ames had one home run and one double, which resulted in one RBI and two runs scored. Against Oregon, he knocked in three RBI and scored one after reaching base via a triple and a double.

In the tournament finale vs. Loyola Marymount, he smashed two home runs; the first sparked the team’s comeback bid from a 5-0 deficit, while the second evened the score at 9-all. He tied career highs in RBI and runs with four and three, respectively, against the Lions.

By virtue of his weekend output, Ames sits in a 13-way tie for first place nationally in home runs (three), fourth in runs per game (two), eighth in RBI per game (2.67) and 10th in runs (six).

Ames was named the Rebel of the Game for his efforts against Loyola Marymount.

Nick Ames (Mountain West)

This list will be updated all year in an effort to recognize all former local prep stars who have gone on to achieve either academic and/or athletic awards at the next level. These are not high school awards but collegiate and professional recognitions. NOT CHAMPIONSHIPS. If you are aware of anything I have missed along the way, please let me know.

We recognized 144 athletes in 2017.
