Perth Wildcats star guard Bryce Cotton (Palo Verde) was named the NBL’s Most Valuable player of the 2017/18 season the league announced on Tuesday.
In a release issued by the league, Cotton scored more points than any other player in the NBL with a total of 544. His average of 19.4 points per game was just 0.4 behind average points leader Jerome Randle. Cotton also sunk a league-high 84 three-pointers in the regular season at an incredible 44.9 per cent despite featuring in the competition’s top-five for three-pointers attempted per game (6.7).
“I feel very honored to receive the MVP award, and I want to give a special mention to my teammates and my coaching staff,” Cotton said in the release.
“Over here we emphasize about playing for the guy next to you, and not really for yourself. To be recognized for the work you’ve put in throughout the whole year is very vindicating.”
Regis freshman standout Tori Brown (Cienega0 went 9-for-16 during the Rangers’ weekend sweep against UCCS. She collected eight RBIs with three doubles and a homer, the first of her collegiate career. In game two, she tallied a career-high four RBIs.
The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) named Brown Softball Player of the Week for her efforts.
This list will be updated all year in an effort to recognize all former local prep stars who have gone on to achieve either academic and/or athletic awards at the next level. These are not high school awards but collegiate and professional recognitions. NOT CHAMPIONSHIPS. If you are aware of anything I have missed along the way, please let me know.
We recognized 144 athletes in 2017.
