American beat Randolph 5-1 Saturday night to avoid elimination in the District 12 Little League Baseball playoffs taking place at Michael Perry Park. American will face Pantano Monday night in the second round of the elimination bracket.

Tomas Hernandez put in a dominating performance from the mound to keep Randolph off the basepaths. Hernandez picked up eight strikeouts while giving up one hit in three innings of work while going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI at the plate. Mario Sierra gave Hernandez an early lead to work with a 2-RBI single in the top of the first.

Hernandez brought in Angel Rivera to put American up 3-0 in the top of the third and American added an unearned run to make it 4-0 in the fourth. Randolph picked up a run in the bottom half of the fourth after Jordan Mayboca led off the inning with a double and Aaron Olivas sacrificed him home one out later. Hernandez collected his second RBI in the fifth inning for the 5-1 final.

Miguel Valenzuela threw the last three innings for American and he ended with five strikeouts and the one earned run. Olivas and Mayboca took the mound for Randolph and they combined for nine strikeouts. Mayboca went 2-3 with a double to lead Randolph at the plate.
