Former Tucson softball standout Mia Trejo & Ironwood Ridge baseball standout Jake Engel earn Player of the Week honors

UNLV softball sophomore standout Mia Trejo (Tucson High) has been tabbed the Mountain West Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. This is the first career weekly honor for Trejo, who was a First Team MW All-Conference performer as a freshman last spring.

Trejo helped the Rebels to the program’s first three-game sweep over San Diego State and the first series win in San Diego since 2005 as she went 4-for-10 (.400) from the plate with five RBI, four runs scored, a home run and five walks. In the 5-4 series-opening win, the first baseman went 1-for-1 with a two-run single in the third inning, a run scored and two walks, then followed that up a 2-for-4 night in a 7-2 game two win, including a three-run home run in the third to put the Rebels up 5-0. It was her team-leading sixth home run of the season – a new career high – and third during conference action, with all three being of the multi-run variety. In Sunday’s series finale, Trejo went 1-for-5 with a run scored to extend her hitting streak to eight games.

The sophomore has been lights out during conference play as she’s gone 12-for-24 (.500) with 15 RBI, seven runs scored, one double, three runs home and eight walks, while she’s reached base safely in 11 straight games. She’s been so dangerous during Mountain West play that teams are beginning to intentionally walking her – San Diego State twice intentionally walked Trejo with runners on in Sunday’s 17-inning marathon.

(Dixie State)

Dixie State junior Jake Engel (Ironwood Ridge) was named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Baseball Player of the Week on Tuesday for his efforts in the Trailblazers’ home series split with Colorado State-Pueblo last weekend.

Engel batted .545 (6-for-11) in the four-game series vs. the ThunderWolves with one double, team-highs of two home runs, six walks and 11 RBI, and seven runs scored in the Trailblazers series split. The junior reached base safely and had at least two RBI and one run scored in all four games, highlighted by a career-high five RBI day with a double and his team-leading 12th home run of the season in the series finale on Sunday. Engel pounded out a career-high four hits in Sunday’s finale, going 4-for-5 overall with two runs scored.

This list will be updated all year in an effort to recognize all former local prep stars who have gone on to achieve either academic and/or athletic awards at the next level. These are not high school awards but collegiate and professional recognitions. NOT CHAMPIONSHIPS. If you are aware of anything I have missed along the way, please let me know.
