Bijan Robinson, a Texas commit, showed how to do the Longhorn symbol with his hands before practice Tuesday.
He will “Hook ‘Em Horns” next season as a freshman at the Austin, Texas, school steeped in tradition. For now, he is hooking in the honors with traditionally strong Salpointe with an eye on claiming the 4A-6A career rushing record in Arizona.
After gaining 430 yards on 13 carries in a 68-34 win at Goodyear Desert Edge last week, Robinson earned the AllSportsTucson.com APS Digital Print/Tucson Conquistadores Player of the Week banner and plaque before practice Tuesday.
Robinson, who will appear on the weekly Wings over Broadway Preview Show later this season. also finished with six touchdowns and he returned a kick for 40 yards last week.
Robinson has 5,342 career rushing yards with seven regular season games remaining. The 4A-6A career rushing record is 5,878, set in 2002 by Marcus Thomas of Tolleson. The AIA record of 7,544 was set by Casey Jahn of Northwest Christian in 2011. NW Christian competes at the 2A level.
Jahn also has the AIA record for career TDs at 112 while former Saguaro standout Christian Kirk (who played for Arizona coach Kevin Sumlin when Sumlin was at Texas A&M) finished with 103 to set the 4A-6A record. Robinson has 83 TDs to this point.
Salpointe (2-0) is without a game this week because of a mistake with El Paso Del Valle’s schedule this Friday (the school errantly did not include the Lancers on its schedule even though it played at Salpointe last season). Salpointe still practiced under the darkening skies late in the afternoon at its home field.
The Lancers will host Glendale Cactus (2-0) on Sept. 20. The initial AIA/MaxPreps Rankings will be released Oct. 1.
APS Digital Print and the Tucson Conquistadores have agreed to recognize the Football Player of the Week and the awards will culminate with the official Frog and Firkin Southern Arizona All-Star lists in December.
