Cienega senior defensive end Damaggio Strevay, part of the Bobcats’ tough defense which has three shutouts, the most in a season in school history, was awarded the APS Digital Print/Tucson Conquistadores Player of the Week honor after practice tonight.
In last week’s 10-0 win at Ironwood Ridge, that clinched the 5A Southern title, Strevay had three sacks and another tackle for loss for the Bobcats, who have won seven straight games and head into the 5A state playoffs seeded No. 7.
Cienega will host No. 10 Phoenix Sunnyslope in a first-round game Friday night. The Bobcats will look for revenge against the Vikings, who beat Cienega 38-10 in Phoenix in the second game of the season.
Strevay, 6-foot-2 and 230 pounds, is one of Southern Arizona’s leader in sacks with eight. He has 38 tackles this season, seven for lost yardage.
He is one of many Cienega players performing well for a defense that held Ironwood Ridge to only 146 yards in total offense.
Linebacker J.T. Craig, who has played in placed of injured Isaiah Webb (foot), had 12 tackles including one for loss against the Nighthawks. Fellow linebacker Dillon Silva recorded 10 tackles and 6-foot-2, 270-pound defensive tackle Hunter Schlagel had six tackles, one for loss.
