Playoffs: Sahuarita girls take second in 3A soccer; Baboquivari girls playing for 1A basketball championship

Sahuarita lost to Gilbert Christian 1-0 on Friday in the 3A state final held at Williams Field High School. This is the highest finish for Sahuarita (18-4-1) and the future looks bright with only one senior near the top of the stat sheet for the Mustangs.

Freshman Sam Wright had 34 goals, sophomore Lina Bracamonte had 32 and freshman Rylee Arrington finished with 30. Senior Alexia Irigoyen collected 15 assists. Freshman keeper Hayle Salcido finished with 70 saves.

Baboquivari (24-6) is headed to the 1A state final for the third year in a row. The Warriors will face Rock Point (24-4) Saturday at Prescott Valley. The Cougars made it to the semifinal round last year.

Salpointe and Catalina Foothills will be meeting in the playoffs for the third time in the last four years and the Lancers have had the upper hand….barely.

Salpointe beat Catalina Foothills 57-55 in the 4A semifinals in 2017 and Salpointe needed double overtime (77-71) to defeat Catalina Foothills in the quarterfinals in 2018. The two power-programs will meet once again on Tuesday, Feb. 25 with the winner advancing to the 4A state final on Saturday, Feb. 29.

Buena and Nogales lost in 5A boys action; Tanque Verde fell in 3A girls basketball play while top-seeded Sabino advances; Bisbee advances in 2A girls basketball; St. Augustine lost in 2A boys basketball but San Manuel remains alive and the Baboquivari boys lost in the 1A semifinals.

Soccer and basketball continues on Saturday.
