Sunnyside Class of 2022 Wrestler Jaime Rivera Commits to Army

Sunnyside’s two-time state champion Jaime Rivera announced today he has committed to attend the West Point U.S. Military Academy and compete in wrestling.

Rivera, who placed first in the state at 120 pounds as a freshman in 2019 and at 132 pounds last year, is 72-9 heading into his junior season with the Blue Devils. He was part of the dynasty’s 32nd and 33rd state championships the last two seasons.

Rivera commented in a tweet today: “Happy to announce that I will be committing to West Point – The U.S. Military Academy to pursue my academic and athletic goals! I want to thank everyone for all of their support throughout my high school journey!!!”

Rivera is attempting to match the feat of Sunnyside legendary wrestler Roman Bravo-Young, who was a four-time state champion. Bravo-Young is entering his junior season at Penn State.

Other recent former Sunnyside wrestlers who have advanced prominently are freshmen Anthony Echemendia of Ohio State and Jesse Ybarra at Iowa.

Echemendia, an immigrant from Cuba, won a state title for Sunnyside in 2018 after going 22-0. He was recently recognized by the Student-Athlete Support Services Office at Ohio State as one of 10 Student-Athletes of the Month for September 2020.

Ybarra was a three-time state champion with the Blue Devils.
