Salpointe sophomore Carlos Astiazaran shot a 2-under-par 34 on Tuesday to hold off Desert View 145 to 178 at Randolph North. Astiazaran carded birdies on the par-5 third hole and ninth hole to come in one stroke ahead of Walden Grove senior Gabriel Escalera. Escalera recorded a bogey on the first hole, drew even on the seventh hole and then birdied the ninth to draw within one shot. Salpointe standout Albert Quihuis matched Escalera with a 1-under 35.

Desert View’s Javier Ramirez shot a 55 to lead the Jaguars.

Astiazaran and Escalera finished in a tie for 14th place at the state tournament last fall along with former Ironwood Ridge standout Jarrod Johnson. As a team, the Lancers took sixth. Escalera qualified as an individual.

The Division II state tournament for the boys will take place on Nov. 4-5 at the OMNI Tucson National Sonoran Course. The top 12 teams in the state will qualify along with the next 18 unattached golfers.
