D-I Girls Golf: OMNI Tucson National Catalina

Liberty junior Mattie Frick posted a 5-over par 151 after day two of the Division I state championship held at the OMNI Tucson National Catalina Course on Tuesday and she felt she was finished for the day. Hamilton standout Jennifer Seo was playing eight groups back and the sophomore was coming down the stretch with a commanding 3-stroke lead.

Xavier freshman standout Kate Hauptman was also in the hunt and she was in that leader’s group so it looked like Frick might be looking at another third place finish like she earned as a freshman and again as a sophomore but then a new set of scores started to pour in and things were trending Frick’s way…

Rincon/University standout Maddie Greene was two shots back of Seo and Frick with four holes left but the senior was unable to cover ground and Greene shot even to take fourth place at 153 along with Pinnacle standout Carolyn Fuller.

Her 7-over finish came after a 42nd finish as a freshman, a 41st finish as a sophomore and a 19th finish last year playing Division II. Greene was the first Rincon/University girl golfer to play in a state tournament since 2009 and this was the first time the program sent a complete team in that same time period. Greene committed to play for Occidental University.

Angelica Martinez (Andy Morales/AllSportsTucson)

Tucson standout Angelica Martinez took 24th and she became the first girl golfer from Southern Arizona to qualify as an individual for D-I state four times in a row. She has a couple of offers on her table and she will be spending some time deciding where she will continue to play.

Rincon/UHS freshman Lily Huether shot 175 and her teammates Hannah Lee (177), Evelyn Jonikas (228) and Isabella Cheeseman (243) helped lead the Rangers to a seventh place finish as a team.
