Cienega RB Gabe Levy commits to University of Mary

Cienega running back Gabe Levy, one of the top college prospects in Southern Arizona last fall, announced today he is committed to attend the University of Mary, an NCAA Division II program in Bismarck, N.D.

Levy is the 20th Class of 2021 local prospect to commit to a college and the seventh from Cienega to do so. He is also the seventh local prospect to commit to colleges in the Dakotas.

“I picked the University of Mary because from Day One they showed they wanted me to go there,” Levy said. “They always sent me letters and the coaches always texted me. They are building a culture there that I want to be a part of.”

In two varsity seasons at Cienega under coach Pat Nugent, Levy, 6-foot and 200 pounds, rushed for 1,341 yards on 191 carries with 11 touchdowns. His season last fall was limited to two games because of COVID-19 and he gained an impressive 359 yards on 46 carries with four touchdowns.

He was also a state-championship caliber wrestler at Cienega.

Levy said this season that he gets his tough, physical style of running between the tackles from his wrestling background.

“Just being able to have balance, not be taken down and stay up I think it comes from wrestling and also watching some of the bigger guys Derek Henry run the ball, just not being able to be taken down by a single person,” Levy said.
