Basketball & Soccer Playoffs: Big night for Salpointe, Flowing Wells & Walden Grove

The Salpointe girls basketball team beat Sahuaro 51-46 at home to advance to the 4A state championship game slated for Saturday, March 20 at noon. The game will be played at St. John Paul II Catholic in Avondale against top-seeded Seton Catholic. Seton Catholic is 19-1 on the year and No. 2 Salpointe is 18-1.

No. 3 Sahuaro finished 17-2 with both losses coming to Salpointe. Salpointe’s one loss came at Sahuaro earlier in the year. Sahuaro standout Alyssa Brown scored 29 points and ended her career with 2,680.

This will be the second time in the state final for the Lancers, having lost the 5A championship in 2003. The Sentinels will be playing for their 12th state championship and the program beat Sahuaro in the 4A state title game last year.

No. 5 Flowing Wells will be making its sixth appearance in a state final after beating No. 8 Gilbert 51 to 41 at home. The Caballeros are now 16-3 and the team will take on No. 3 Millennium at Mesquite High School at noon on Saturday. Millennium is 14-4 on the year. The Tigers won back-to-back titles in 2019 and 2020. Flowing Wells won it all in 2008.

The No. 3 Salpointe girls soccer team defeated No. 2 Notre Dame 3-0 to advance to the 4A state final scheduled to be played Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against No. 1 Prescott with the match to be played at Coronado High School. The Lancers are now 10-0-1 and Prescott is 14-0.

The Badgers were the top-ranked team last year but the team lost to Catalina Foothills in the semifinal round. The Falcons moved up to 5A this year and the team fell to No. 1 Casteel 3-0 in the semifinal round Wednesday night. Prescott has been to a state final game twice with the last one coming in 2010 while Salpointe will be playing for a fourth title in the last five years.

The Walden Grove boys got past No. 2 Prescott 1-0 to advance to the 4A state championship game for the first time in school history. Ranked No. 3, the Red Wolves will take on No. 1 Salpointe at Mountain View at 2 p.m. Walden Grove is now 10-2 on the year with one loss coming at home against Salpointe.

Salpointe is now 13-0-1 and head coach Wolfgang Weber will be going for career win 699.
