Pacho pitches Sunnyside to opening round win of state Majors tournament

Anyssa Pacho pitched a complete game and went 2 for 3 with two runs, a double and two RBIs to lead Sunnyside to a 9-4 win over San Pedro Valley (Benson) in an opening round game Tuesday of the Arizona Little League State Majors Softball Tournament at Desert Mountain Park at Queen Creek.

Pacho, the cousin of former Ironwood Ridge star and current Arizona player Izzy Pacho, struck out six batters with two walks in five innings.

Sunnyside, the District 12 champion from southern Tucson, advances to the second round of the winner’s bracket, where it will face Continental of District 1 (Flagstaff) on Wednesday at 7:45 p.m. Continental defeated Prescott Valley (District 10) by a score of 14-0 on Tuesday.

Marana, of District 5 (northern Tucson), lost its first round game 17-0 to Cactus Hills of District 3 (Cave Creek). Marana will play an elimination bracket game Thursday at 7:45 p.m. against an opponent to be determined (see tournament schedule below).

Other standouts for Sunnyside against San Pedro Valley (the District 8 champion) were Yzenia Escarcega (2 for 3 with two runs), Carissa Palomarez (3 for 4 with a run and two RBIs, including an RBI triple) and Camryn Moraga (1 for 3 with a run and RBI single).

San Pedro Valley will play Prescott Valley in an elimination bracket game Wednesday at 7:45 p.m.

Paisley Gooding had a three-run triple in the fifth inning for San Pedro Valley and scored from third on a throwing error on the play.

Sunnyside did most of its scoring in a seven-run third inning in which it sent 11 batters to the plate. Palomarez and Escarcega had RBI singles and Pacho a two-run single in the rally.

Moraga’s RBI single in the fourth scored Pacho, who earlier doubled, and Palomarez’s triple in the fifth brought home Escarcega (who walked) for Sunnyside’s other two runs.

Marana’s Kyla Layton finished 1 for 2 and defensive standout third baseman Abrianna Gray turned an unassisted double play in the first inning in its game against Cactus Hills, whose starter Lilly Hamel struck out 12 and walked one in four innings.
