Sunnyside overcame a four-run deficit to Flagstaff Continental, rallying for 13 runs in the fourth inning to win 17-10 in a winner’s bracket game of the Arizona Little League Majors state tournament at Queen Creek on Wednesday night.

The victory for Sunnyside, the District 12 champs, places it in the winner’s bracket semifinals against District 14 host team Queen Creek on Thursday at 5:45 p.m.

Sunnyside batted through the lineup twice in the fourth, highlighted by Camila Vargas hitting a grand slam after the bases became loaded with three straight walks with one out.

Every player in Sunnyside’s lineup scored that inning with Carissa Palomarez, Aviana Lopez, Anyssa Pacho and Vargas scoring twice with at least one hit. Camryn Moraga, Yzabella Armenta and Hailey Mariscal also recorded a hit and a run with Armenta belting a triple.

Pacho, the winning pitcher in Tuesday’s opening-round game of the tournament against San Pedro Valley, pitched the last two innings and retired all six batters while also striking out the side in the sixth.

San Pedro Valley of the Benson area remained alive on Wednesday winning an elimination bracket game 12-1 over Prescott Valley. San Pedro Valley will face Casa Grande, a 17-0 loser to Arcadia on Wednesday, in another elimination-bracket game Thursday at 7:45 p.m.

Marana, the District 5 champions, will attempt to stay alive in the elimination bracket Thursday with a game against Pinal Mountain at 7:45 p.m. Pinal Mountain lost to Queen Creek 25-0 on Wednesday.
