Pueblo has canceled its game Friday at 4A Kino champion Casa Grande because of COVID-19 protocol, and in another scheduling development, Empire has added a game at Phoenix Sunnyslope on Nov. 12 to close the regular season.
Pueblo (3-5, 0-2 4A Kino) plans to play its last regular season game next week at Walden Grove (2-6, 0-2) after having its players cleared to return to practice next Wednesday or Thursday.
“We will do whatever we can to get our seniors one last game,” Pueblo coach Jake Allen mentioned.
Empire (5-4, 3-0 4A Gila) will host Catalina Foothills (4-4, 2-0) on Friday to reach 10 games, but coach George Kelly felt the Ravens could handle the challenge of one more regular-season game.
“We want to compete and give Sunnyslope a competitive 10th game for their schedule,” Kelly said.
The 4A 31st-ranked Ravens may also benefit from the matchup with Sunnyslope, the No. 21 team in the 5A, in terms of qualifying for the 4A state playoffs. It could boost their power rating especially with potential wins over Catalina Foothills and Sunnyslope.
The top 16-rated teams in 4A qualify for the state playoffs.
