92 teams and 513 wrestlers from Arizona, New Mexico and Texas are taking part in the 55th Flowing Wells Wrestling Invitational taking place at the Tucson Convention Center this Friday and Saturday.
2021 AIA Division I team champion Sunnyside leads the boy’s side 235 to 178. 5 after Friday’s competition over Peoria Liberty. The Lions took second place to Sunnyside at the D-I state meet last year but Liberty beat Sunnyside at the Flowing Wells Invitational in 2020.
The Blue Devils are dominating this year’s version with 12 wrestlers still alive in the 14 weight classes including returning state champions James Armstrong (120) and Rene Fragoso (190).
Other state champions in the field include Damien Moreno of Yuma Kofa (106), Enzo Spina of Ironwood Ridge (113), Gabe Gonzales of Globe (120), Michael Trujillo of Liberty (132) and Tyler Sauter of Liberty (157).
D-III state team champion Safford is competing and the Bulldogs are in 18th place with 80 points. D-III team runner-up Sahuarita is in 4th place with 126 points.
Sectional competition for the boys is scheduled for Feb.12. with Mountain View slated to be the host site for D-II/S-IV.
The girls are competing for the first team title in invitational history after the AIA approved team competition for the sport last year. The girls did compete as individuals in 2020.
Liberty took second place at the inaugural AIA state championship last winter and the Lions are in first place heading into Saturday with a 57.5 to 49 lead over Montwood (TX).
State champions in the field include Bella Bocenagra of Liberty (100), Audrey Jimenez of Sunnyside (107) and Bree Garcia of Goldwater (126). The weight classes also decreased from 14 to 12 for the girls this year. Flowing Wells will host the Sectional on Feb. 5.

Andy Morales was recognized by the AIA as the top high school reporter in 2014, he was awarded the Ray McNally Award in 2017, a 2019 AZ Education News award winner and he has been a youth, high school and college coach for over 30 years. He was the first in Arizona to write about high school beach volleyball and high school girls wrestling. His own children have won multiple state high school championships and were named to all-state teams. Competing in hockey, basketball, baseball and track & field in high school, his unique perspective can only be found here and on AZPreps365.com. Andy is the Southern Arizona voting member of the Ed Doherty Award, recognizing the top football player in Arizona, and he was named a Local Hero by the Tucson Weekly for 2016. Andy was named an Honorary Flowing Wells Caballero in 2019, became a member of the Sunnyside Los Mezquites Cross Country Hall of Fame in 2021 and he was a member of the Amphi COVID-19 Blue Ribbon Committee and he earned a Distinguished Service Award from Amphitheater.
