92 teams and 513 wrestlers from Arizona, New Mexico and Texas are taking part in the 55th Flowing Wells Wrestling Invitational taking place at the Tucson Convention Center this Friday and Saturday.

2021 AIA Division I team champion Sunnyside leads the boy’s side 235 to 178. 5 after Friday’s competition over Peoria Liberty. The Lions took second place to Sunnyside at the D-I state meet last year but Liberty beat Sunnyside at the Flowing Wells Invitational in 2020.

The Blue Devils are dominating this year’s version with 12 wrestlers still alive in the 14 weight classes including returning state champions James Armstrong (120) and Rene Fragoso (190).

Other state champions in the field include Damien Moreno of Yuma Kofa (106), Enzo Spina of Ironwood Ridge (113), Gabe Gonzales of Globe (120), Michael Trujillo of Liberty (132) and Tyler Sauter of Liberty (157).

D-III state team champion Safford is competing and the Bulldogs are in 18th place with 80 points. D-III team runner-up Sahuarita is in 4th place with 126 points.

Sectional competition for the boys is scheduled for Feb.12. with Mountain View slated to be the host site for D-II/S-IV.

The girls are competing for the first team title in invitational history after the AIA approved team competition for the sport last year. The girls did compete as individuals in 2020.

Liberty took second place at the inaugural AIA state championship last winter and the Lions are in first place heading into Saturday with a 57.5 to 49 lead over Montwood (TX).

State champions in the field include Bella Bocenagra of Liberty (100), Audrey Jimenez of Sunnyside (107) and Bree Garcia of Goldwater (126). The weight classes also decreased from 14 to 12 for the girls this year. Flowing Wells will host the Sectional on Feb. 5.
