Wrestling: Diego Gadea results

25 teams on the boy’s side and 13 from the girls took part in the Diego Gadea Invitational hosted by Salpointe on Friday and Saturday. All of the bouts were competed mats placed outside in Ed Doherty Stadium.

Mesa Mountain View scored 218 points to take the championship from Sahuarita (195.5). Mountain View is a Division I program and Sahuarita is expected to compete for the D-III crown in February. Poston Butte won the girl’s tournament, 60 to 52 over Canyon del Oro.

Sectionals for the Girls are scheduled for Feb. 5 and the Boys will compete for a shot at stet on the Feb.12. The state tournament is slated for the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum with all placing matches and finals taking place on Saturday, Feb, 19.

Andy Morales was recognized by the AIA as the top high school reporter in 2014, he was awarded the Ray McNally Award in 2017, a 2019 AZ Education News award winner and he has been a youth, high school and college coach for over 30 years. Andy was named an Honorary Flowing Wells Caballero in 2019, became a member of the Sunnyside Los Mezquites Cross Country Hall of Fame in 2021 and he was a member of the Amphi COVID-19 Blue Ribbon Committee and he earned a Distinguished Service Award from Amphitheater.
