WINTER PLAYOFF SCHEDULE
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 16
The No. 4 Sabino girls easily defeated top-seeded Benjamin Franklin 5-0 Wednesday night to advance to the Championship of the 3A Conference slated to take part Friday against No. 2 Northwest Christian. The match will be played at 5 p.m. at Glendale High School.
The Sabercats are now 13-0-1 in ranking matches and Northwest Christian is 12-0. Sabino last played for a state championship in 2011, which was a 1-0 loss to Catalina Foothills. The Sabercats have two state titles (1996 and 2008). The Crusaders won it all in 2019 and 2021.
In other soccer action No. 7 Salpointe knocked off No. 2 Flagstaff 1-0 on a goal from Kyleigh Oliver with 42 seconds left during snow flurries in Flagstaff. The Lancers will face No. 6 Walden Grove in the 4A semifinals. No. 3 Cienega beat No. 6 Millennium 5-1 to advance to the 5A semifinals.

Andy Morales was recognized by the AIA as the top high school reporter in 2014, he was awarded the Ray McNally Award in 2017, a 2019 AZ Education News award winner and he has been a youth, high school and college coach for over 30 years. He was the first in Arizona to write about high school beach volleyball and high school girls wrestling. His own children have won multiple state high school championships and were named to all-state teams. Andy is the Southern Arizona voting member of the Ed Doherty Award, recognizing the top football player in Arizona, and he was named a Local Hero by the Tucson Weekly for 2016. Andy was named an Honorary Flowing Wells Caballero in 2019, became a member of the Sunnyside Los Mezquites Cross Country Hall of Fame in 2021 and he was a member of the Amphi COVID-19 Blue Ribbon Committee and he earned a Distinguished Service Award from Amphitheater.
