  • Glenn Posey is in his second stint as head coach of his alma mater. He enters his fourth season in this recent tenure and ninth overall. The Blue Devils have gone 3-7 in his first season in 2019, 3-4 in the 2020 season affected by COVID-19 protocol and 6-4 last season.
  • The Blue Devils begin the season with two road games, including the Duel in the District matchup with rival Desert View in the opener on Sept. 2. They follow that game with a trip to Scottsdale to face Cactus Shadows. The Falcons finished 6-5 last season with a loss in the first round of the 5A playoffs to eventual champion Scottsdale Horizon.
  • Posey’s team then rounds out the non-region with a game at home against Canyon View (7-4 last season with a first-round loss in the 5A state playoffs), at Ironwood Ridge and at home against Tucson.
  • The game against the Badgers is a special one with former Sunnyside coach Richard Sanchez, who coached the Blue Devils to state titles in 2001 and 2003, now Tucson’s head coach.
  • Sunnyside’s 5A Sonoran slate includes three home games and two road games, one of them against Marana on Oct. 21. The Blue Devils will be looking to avenge last season’s loss at Marana, a game in which they led by three touchdowns in the fourth quarter before losing 36-35.
