  • Palo Verde bided its time last season playing through a junior varsity schedule after canceling the varsity season because of a lack of healthy players. The Titans, under third-year coach Mike Wells, will return to varsity competition in 2022 a classification lower at 3A after being in the 4A Gila in recent years. The school successfully appealed the re-classification because of their problem of having an adequate amount of students participate in football.
  • Competing in the 3A South will be no easy task, however, with established Tucson-area programs such as Sabino (Sept. 16) and Pusch Ridge (Oct. 21) — both of which advanced to the state playoffs last year — visiting the Titans’ field. Traditional 3A powers Safford (on the road Oct. 7) and Thatcher (at home Oct. 28) are also on the schedule as is Benson, which advanced to the 2A state championship game and semifinals in the last two seasons. The Titans travel to Benson (Sept. 23).
  • Palo Verde’s scheduled return to varsity football will be at home Aug. 19 against San Tan Foothills, which finished 1-9 last season. The other non-region games are at Florence (4-6 last year) on Aug. 26, at Catalina (1-9) on Sept. 2, Santa Rita (1-9) at home Sept. 9 and at Tempe (0-8) on Oct. 14. Those non-region opponents were 7-41 last season.
