New Mexico State-bound senior right-hander Roman Bracamonte struck out 10 batters in 6 1/3 innings, allowing only three hits, in the Nogales Apaches’ 8-0 win over Sunrise Mountain Thursday night in a 5A winners bracket third-round game at Tempe.
The top-seeded Apaches (30-2) next play Wednesday at 6:30 in the semifinals at Mesa’s HoHoKam Park against either Sunrise Mountain or Desert Mountain. Those teams play in an elimination-bracket game Monday at Diablo Stadium in Tempe.
Nogales has won 10 straight games and has outscored the opposition 84-20 in that span.
Bracamonte is 8-0 with a 1.27 ERA with 85 strikeouts and 10 walks in 55 innings pitched this season.
His batterymate also headed to New Mexico State, junior catcher Thomas Teel, provided him all the offensive help he needed with a two-run double in the first that ignited a four-run rally. Teel finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs.
Nogales had another four-run rally in the fourth inning that included an RBI single by Arizona-bound Demetrio Crisantes and three times a run scored with a walk with the bases loaded.
Luis Martin Romero, the No. 8 hitter, went 2 for 3 with a run.
