Walden Grove went from facing elimination down a run entering the sixth inning Saturday to celebrating almost an hour later a trip to the semifinal round of the 4A state tournament.

The second-seeded Red Wolves’ 7-5 win over No. 6 Notre Dame Prep in an elimination-bracket game puts them into the semifinals on Wednesday against No. 3 Salpointe at Tempe Diablo Stadium at 6:30 p.m.

Because Walden Grove (27-4) reached the semifinals through the elimination bracket, it must beat Salpointe (21-10) on Wednesday and Thursday to reach the state title game May 16.

No. 4 CDO (22-7) plays No. 5 Mesquite (23-9-1) in another semifinal game at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at Diablo Stadium. Mesquite came through the elimination bracket after losing to CDO 2-1 on May 2, so it must beat the Dorados twice to reach the championship.

The Red Wolves trailed Notre Dame Prep 5-4 on Saturday when Andrew Romo hit a double to left field to lead off the sixth inning.

After a srikeout, Parker Witt singled to advance Romo to third base. Milo Rushford, who is batting .622, was intentionally walked to load the bases and create a force out at any base.

Colby Gaines drew a walk to force Romo home with the tying run.

Damian Lorta followed with a single that scored Witt with the go-ahead run. Fletcher Edwards hit another single that scored Gaines to put Walden Grove ahead 7-5.

Sidearmed right-hander Alex “Guero” Urias-Calvillo turned back a bases-loaded rally by Notre Dame Prep with two outs in the seventh inning.

He got the last batter to fly out to center field.

Edwards finished 3 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs. Lorta also went 3 for 4 with a run and RBI. Alejandro Martinez was 2 for 3.
