4A SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP: No. 3 CDO vs. No. 1 Salpointe

No. 3 CDO and No. 1 Salpointe will meet for the third time this season when they play each other at Hillenbrand Stadium at 5 p.m. on Monday for the 4A state championship.

The Lancers (31-2) won both games against CDO (33-3) in the regular season as part of their 4A Kino competition. Salpointe won at CDO 14-3 in five innings on April 6 and the Lancers beat the visiting Dorados 7-1 on April 21.

Salpointe has won five state championships, including the last three under former coach Amy Baray-Rocha. The Lancers have reached the championship under first-year coach Tricia Sztan, a former Salpointe standout who won a state championship playing for Stacy (Hill) Iveson in 1993 as a junior.

Kelly Fowler has coached CDO to three state titles in 2005, 2011 and 2017.

She recently achieved her 300th career win at CDO when the Dorados beat Mingus 10-0 in a quarterfinal game. Her record spanning 12 years (in three different stints with the Dorados) is 301-61-1.
