Little League: Two possible softball championships on tap for Thursday night

Sunnyside beat Southwestern 12-5 Wednesday night in District 12 Junior Softball action to go up 1-0 in the best-of-three series held at the Field of Dreams Complex. The second game of the championship series is slated for Thursday night at 5:15 p.m. If Sunnyside prevails, the team will advance to the State Tournament scheduled for Avondale starting on July 8. The West Region Tournament starts on July 23 at Arthur Pack. If Southwestern wins then the two teams will play Friday night at 7:45 p.m. in the final game.

Thornydale (2-0) is going up against Continental Ranch (0-1) at Arthur Pack to decide the District 5 8-10 Softball championship Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. Thornydale beat Continental Ranch 14-3 on Tuesday to send the team to the Elimination Bracket and Continental Ranch defeated Tucson Mountain 12-7 Wednesday night to set up the rematch with Thornydale. If Continental Ranch wins, then the “If Game” will be played Friday night. The 8-10 State Tournament will be played in Sierra Vista starting on July 15.

In District 5 Little League Majors action held at Ora Mae Harn District Park in Marana, Western beat Flowing Wells 19-9 and Oro Valley beat Tucson Mountain 9-3 Wednesday night to stay alive in the Elimination Bracket. The next round of the Elimination Bracket is slated for Friday night.

Canyon View (1-0) will face CDO (1-0) and Marana (1-0) will face Continental Ranch (1-0) Thursday night in the Majors Winner’s Bracket. These four teams are a step closer to reaching the State Tournament to be held in Litchfield Park. This is the level that ultimately plays in the Little League World Series in Williamsport.

OV: Izdrel Delgado had a single; Kiki Whitney had 2 doubles; Evan Voigt had a single and an RBI; Kosta Kapor had a single and an RBI; Ashton Fazio had a single; Dylan Gandolph had a single; Nolan Baer went 2 for 2 with a double and Ethan Eynott picked up a hit. Eynott started the game with 5 strikeouts; Owen Carrigan collected 6 strikeouts in relief and Braden Arellano faced two batters and picked up a strikeout.

TM: Victor Valenzuela had 2 doubles; Alberto Perez went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI; Elias Fuentes walked; Giovanni Fimbres had a single; Gael Rivera hit a home run; Edgardo Cornejo had a single and Gustavo Carranza had a triple. Rivera got the start for Tucson Mountain. Fimbres and Fuentes also saw action on the mound.
