Little League All-Stars: Sunnyside wins District 12 8-10 Softball Championship

Sunnyside beat Southwestern 9-3 Thursday night at the Field of Dreams complex to claim the District 12 8-10 Softball championship. The team from Mission Manor Park advances to the state tournament slated to start on July 15 in Sierra Vista. Thornydale will represent District 5 in the tournament.

Southwestern beat Sunnyside 4-3 on Saturday and Sunnyside beat Copper Hills Wednesday night to set up a rematch with Southwestern Wednesday night in a must-win situation in the double elimination format. Sunnyside came back late in that game to take it 11-9 to force the “If Game” Thursday night.

Jade Gonzalez controlled the circle for Sunnyside with 12 strikeouts and no earned runs given up. She scattered four hits with Micaella Lopez collecting three of those for Southwestern. Cassia Duran picked up the other hit.

Sunnyside scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning to take control of the championship game. Enyelin Gonzalez and Noelle Valenzuela had inside-the-park home runs in the game for Sunnyside. Daniela Leon and Viany Toledo had two hits each.

Lopez had seven strikeouts for Southwestern and Alicia Vasquez and Adelina Elbie also saw pitching action.

In baseball action, Sunnyside eliminated Empire 14-4 in the Majors Division to reduce the number of teams battling for the District 12 Little League title to Copper Hills (2-0), Rincon (2-0), Cactus (1-1), Sunnyside (1-1), Southwestern (0-1) and Randolph (0-1),

The D-12 Junior Baseball championship will be decided Friday night at Jesse Owns between Copper Hills (4-1) and Sunnyside (3-1) at 6:30 p.m.
