CHAMPIONSHIP: Class 1A (known as Class C at the time)

SCORE: Mayer 26, Valley Union 16

DATE: November 16, 1975

SITE: Tempe McClintock High School

GAME SUMMARY: Valley Union rallied late after falling behind 26-0 but it was too-little, too-late for the Blue Devils to cap off their season with a championship with an unbeaten record under L.W. Jackson. Valley Union finished its season 8-1 while Spring Valley Mayer completed a 9-0 record in the battle of the unbeatens.

After Mayer’s Mike Johnson rushed 11 yards for a touchdown to put the Wildcats ahead 26-0 with 5:48 remaining in the third quarter, Valley Union finally came to life. Blue Devils quarterback Paul White heaved a 70-yard touchdown bomb to Danny Zamora. White and Zamora later connected on a 30-yard touchdown as time expired in the game, and Valley Union capped it with a two-point conversion run.

Valley Union drove the ball in its previous possession to the Mayer 8, where it had a fourth-and-goal situation. White swept right and was stopped at the 4, turning the ball over on downs.

Valley Union was held to 82 yards rushing. White passed for 142 yards, 100 of them on the scoring plays to Zamora. Mayer dominated on the ground with 252 yards rushing. It had 19 first downs compared to only nine for Valley Union.
