Helena Pueyo scored a career-high 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field to lead No. 15 Arizona to an 86-60 win over San Diego on Saturday night to win the San Diego Thanksgiving Classic.
The senior from Spain hit all three of her 3-pointers for the Wildcats (6-0). It was the first game of her Arizona career with at least 20 points.
Freshman Maya Nnaji made all seven of her shots to score a season-best 17 points off the bench. Jade Loville added 15 points and Kailyn Gilbert 10.
Nnaji is one of eight players and two freshmen this season to shoot 100 percent from the field with at least seven shots made.
Arizona scored the last 10 points of the first quarter for an 18-8 lead and the last 10 of the second quarter to lead 36-21 at halftime.
San Diego (4-3) was as close as 14 with six minutes left in the game but Pueyo scored nine points in a 13-0 run to help close it out.
The Wildcats scored 23 points off of 23 turnovers. They have forced at least 20 turnovers every game this season.
NOTES
–The Wildcats begin the season 6-0 for the fourth consecutive season.
–Arizona’s offense ranks fifth in the nation after the game with 90.8 points per game. The Wildcats are also sixth in scoring margin at 34.6.
–The Wildcats’ field-goal percentage ranks 10th nationally at 40.6 percent.
–Arizona closed out the first quarter with an 18-8 lead to mark the fourth game this season in which the team has entered the second quarter with at least a 10-point lead.
—Adia Barnes’ team has scored 81 points or more in every game of the season.
–With the 26-point win over the Toreros, Arizona has beaten five of its six opponents by 20 or more points this season.
