No. 18 Pima men 12-1 after going unbeaten in Aztec Holiday Classic

The Pima Community College men’s basketball team completed play in the Aztec Holiday Classic on Saturday going undefeated at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The No. 18 ranked Aztecs (12-1) defeated Borger (Texas) Frank Phillips College 81-63 on Saturday, capping the 3-0 run against NJCAA Division I teams. They beat Eastern Wyoming College 111-65 on Thursday and downed Bismarck (N.D.) State College 92-73 on Friday.

The Aztecs led 46-40 early in the second half and sophomore Cesar Saenz (Sabino grad) converted on a three-point play and scored the next basket to put the Aztecs up by double digits. His mini run sparked a 13-0 run for Pima as they took a 59-40 with 10:50 left.

The Aztecs held their biggest lead of the game at 70-46 when freshman Mike Pope hit a three-pointer. The Aztecs maintained their double-digit lead to close them out.

The Aztecs went up early but the Plainsmen countered with a 10-0 run to put Pima down 12-11.

Freshman Dillan Baker (Salpointe Catholic) hit a three-pointer to put the Aztecs back up on the next possession. Pope converted on a four-point play and Baker had a three-point play to make it 36-22. The Aztecs led 38-30 at halftime.

Baker finished with a game-high 23 points as he went 6 for 12 from the field and 4 for 8 from 3-point range. He was also 7 for 8 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Traivar Jackson posted 17 points, five rebounds and three steals. Pope added 13 points as he went 4 for 5 from downtown and also had five rebounds and three assists.

Saenz contributed with 10 points, seven rebounds, six assists, two steals and a block.

The Aztecs get back to ACCAC conference play on Wednesday when they host South Mountain Community College. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
