Pima women capture fourth straight victory

The Pima Community College women’s basketball team picked up its fourth straight win on Saturday as it earned a road victory at Central Arizona College.

The No. 12 ranked Aztecs (15-4, 8-3 in ACCAC) downed the Vaqueras 70-60 as Pima snapped a 5-game losing streak to Central Arizona (9-11, 4-7).

Their last win against them was a 114-112 triple-overtime win on Feb. 2, 2019.

The Aztecs led 34-31 at halftime and outscored the Vaqueras in the third quarter 18-16 and fourth quarter 18-13.

“This team doesn’t always play the prettiest game or make all their shots, but they care about each other and play as a team,” Pima women’s basketball coach Todd Holthaus said. “A joy to coach.”

Sophomore Luisa Chavez (Rio Rico grad) scored a team-high 19 points for the second straight game. She also added nine rebounds and five steals.

Sophomore Torrance Begay added 13 points along with three rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Freshman Dominique Acosta (Nogales) finished with a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds. She had 16 rebounds on Wednesday against Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

Sophomore Priscila Varela also added 10 points.

Sophomore Aiona Johnson contributed with eight points and six rebounds.

The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Gymnasium on Wednesday when they play Phoenix College to start off the second half of the season. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Pima men’s basketball team (16-3, 8-3 in ACCAC) lost its second straight game on Saturday at Central Arizona College (5-11, 4-7).

The No. 8 ranked Aztecs (Division II) fell 74-68 to the Vaqueros (Division I). The Aztecs led 34-32 at halftime but were outscored 42-34 in the second half.

Freshman Jaylen Alexander scored 13 of his team-high 17 points in the first half. Sophomores Traivar Jackson and Cesar Saenz (Sabino) each finished with 13 points. Freshman Dillan Baker (Salpointe Catholic) added 10 points.

The Aztecs return to the West Campus Gymnasium on Wednesday against Phoenix College at 5:30 p.m.
