As a Star Rank boy scout, volunteer coach for youth sports and recognized as an Employee of the Month, Hyrum Tanner of Empire High School has balanced his employment and civic leadership with his excellence in the classroom and dedication to his sport on the field.

His high level of accomplishments on and off the field merited him the National Football Federation Southern Arizona Chapter Scholar-Athlete 2023 honoree. Tanner earned a $1500 cash award with the recognition.

Arizona punter Kyle Ostendorp was selected the NFF-Southern Arizona Chapter’s Collegiate Scholar-Athlete honoree.

As an Honors and AP student, Hyrum has maintained a 4.1 GPA while racking up football honors such as All Sports Tucson Southern Arizona first and second team honors on both sides of the ball.

A free safety and wide receiver, Tanner also participated in the Blue-Grey All-American game in Dallas.

He will continue his education and football career at Concordia College-Moorehead in Minnesota.

“With his incredible zeal, support from his parents, Martha and Jeremy Tanner, head coach George Kelly and AD Shannon Woolridge, Hyrum is the epitome of our Scholar-Athlete Honoree,” the NFF-Southern Arizona mentioned in a release.

The NFF-Southern Arizona Chapter started a Recognition Tour (May 1-19) of local athletes on Monday with a visit to Willcox to honor Cowboys senior running back Christian Pando.

Other stops will occur at Morenci for RB Patrick Chavez, Nogales for DB Benjamin Ley-Shipley, Pusch RIdge for LB Tyler Mustain and DE Will Way, Duncan for LB/WR Gary Najar, Flowing Wells for LB Pedro Preciado and Sabino for OT Will Urbina.

The chapter has also recognized team managers Andrea Verdugo of Rio Rico and Mario Escobedo of Pueblo with the 12th Man Award, which recognizes student-athletes who impact their community and play important roles in their high school programs.
