American Legion State Championship Series: Sunnyside over Tucson 13-6

DEPARTMENT OF ARIZONA AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL PLAYOFFS

Post 73 Crush (Sunnyside) beat Post 7 Tucson 13-6 to go up 1-0 in the best-of-3 championship series taking place at the Kino Baseball Complex. The second game is set for Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. and the third game, if necessary, is slated for Thursday night at the same time.

Sunnyside is now 11-4 this summer and Tucson is 12-4 with two of those losses coming to Sunnyside. Tucson won the 2022 state championship.

Sunnyside took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning and Tucson fought back to cut the Crush lead down to 6-5 after five innings of play but Sunnyside added one in the sixth and six runs in the seventh for the victory.

Jose Grijalva went 1 for 3 with a double and three RBIs to lead Sunnyside, Jesus Rodriguez went 2-4 with a triple and two RBIs, Argeniz Mazon went 2-5 with a double and an RBI, Jordan Mayboca went 2-3 with an RBI, Jorge Ruiz went 3-2 with two RBIs, Michel Muniz had an RBI as did Omar Ruiz. Orlando Cobarrubias picked up five strikeouts and Mayboca threw one inning.

Jaden Leon went 2-4 with a triple and an RBI for Tucson, Maddox Jones went 2-4 with a triple and two RBIs, Gennaro Brito went 2-4 with an RBI, Ramses Mada had an RBI and Jorge Castro has an RBI. Aldo Teilon, Javier Encinas, Jose Zepeda and Uziel Castillo had a hit. Brito and Castillo took the mound for Tucson.
