Sierra Vista, the District 8 champs, had two hits each from Riley Shamas, Briggs McMurtrie and Dax Henretta in its mercy-rul win over Red Mountain in five innings to reach the winners bracket semifinals against Cactus Foothills at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. McMurtrie and Crue Isaacson each had a double and Julius Pacheco blasted a home run. Hayes Moore and Shamas combined on a four-hitter. Moore struck out four and allowed four hits in 4 1/3 innings and Shamas struck out the two batters he faced in the fifth inning.
Canyon View, the District 5 champs, took care of Mt. Graham in three innings with its mercy-rule win to also reach the winners bracket semifinals against Lake Havasu at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Colin Tumlinson went 3 for 3 with two doubles, three runs and two RBIs to lead Canyon View. Lukas Gerlach also drove in three runs and had a double. Raj Abramian, Luke Newman, Miles Anderson and Ethan Burnside each had two hits. Anderson produced two RBIs.
Sunnyside, the District 12 champs, stayed alive in its elimination-bracket victory over Arcadia. Andres Valenzuela and David Blasi each drove in two runs with Valenzuela, the winning pitcher, belting a home run and Blasi a double. Ozzie Guadarrama went 2 for 3 with two runs. Sunnyside plays Red Mountain on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the next round of the elimination bracket.
