The Mica Mountain Thunderbolts (17-3) finished second out of 112 teams this weekend at the Epic Tourneys Volleyball Invitational after taking on both Canyon del Oro and Salpointe and coming out on top earlier in the week.

The Bolts went 2-1 on Friday, finishing first in the Platinum Pool at the ASU Fitness Center with wins over Paradise Honors (25-14, 27-25) and Rancho Solano (25-17, 25-19) and a loss to St. Mary’s (18-25, 25-18, 12-15). The team went 3-1 on Saturday to take second place with wins over Mountain View (25-21, 25-22), Saguaro (25-16, 25-23) and Campo Verde (25-21, 25-19) with a loos to Valley Christian (15-25, 22-25) in the final.

“Our team is coming together. We knew we had a huge week coming into the week with CDO, Salpointe and this tournament,” Mica Mountain head coach Amy Johnson said. “We rose to the challenge at CDO and again at Salpointe. We are playing really good volleyball right now. We had a few hiccups this weekend but can’t wait to get into the gym next week and work on those things. Great things ahead for this team.”

Soso Okpara, a starting junior for the Thunderbolts, carried the team with the most kills at 36 and Aubrey Neccas, a starting freshman, had a total of 35 kills this weekend. The team’s chemistry and a combination of solid defense and offense carried them to the tournament championship.

Last year the Thunderbolts were invited to the same tournament and finished in the top 16. Overall, the program continues to grow and get stronger everyday.
