Pima women improve to 8-2 with rout of South Mountain

The Pima Community College women’s basketball team dominated South Mountain 80-34 on Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The No. 14 Aztecs (8-2, 5-1 in ACCAC) controlled the first three quarters against the winless Cougars (0-8, 0-5).

Pima led 21-6 at the end of the first quarter and started the second quarter on a 13-2 run to take a 34-8 lead. The Aztecs led 46-16 at halftime.

They put together a 16-2 run and outscored the Cougars 20-3 in the third quarter.

Freshman Rylei Waugh finished with a game-high 17 points, along with eight rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Sophomore Dominique Acosta (Nogales) posted her second straight double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Acosta had 18 points and 14 rebounds in Pima’s win on Wednesday at Chandler-Gilbert Community College.

·The Aztecs played 15 players, and everyone scored in the game. The bench finished with 44 points. Sophomore Jordan Joe, and freshmen Katie Burns (Catalina Foothills) and Sage Begay each had six points.

Freshmen Annalise Holthaus (Ironwood Ridge) and Gabby Lopez (Bisbee) each grabbed seven rebounds.

The Aztecs finished with 26 offensive rebounds.

Pima will be on holiday break and will return to play in the Aztec Holiday Classic from Dec. 28-30 at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

The Aztecs will play Bismarck (N.D.) State College on Thursday, Dec. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
